Etymology[edit]
Calque of Assamese ভোট-জলকীয়া (bhüt-zolokia, “Bhutanese chili”). The first element bhüt, meaning Bhutanese, was mistakenly confused for a near-homonym bhut meaning ghost, thus producing the English (mis-)translation "ghost pepper".[1]
