From Old Danish tryde, from Old Norse þrjóta, from Proto-Germanic *þreutaną (“to harass”), cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk tryta (archaic), Swedish tryta, German verdrießen. The Danish form with the prefix is influenced by Middle Low German vordrēten.
