Etymology[edit]
From Middle Low German vīentlik, from vient + -lik, equivalent to fiende + -lig. Compare similar constructions with Norwegian Bokmål fiendtlig, Norwegian Nynorsk fiendtleg, fiendsleg, Danish fjendtlig, German feindlich, Dutch vijandelijk and English fiendly.
