Borrowed from Esperanto fervojo. Equivalent to fero (iron) +‎ voyo (road, way), calque of Italian ferrovia, German Eisenbahn, Russian желе́зная доро́га (želéznaja doróga), Spanish ferrocarril and French chemin de fer.
