Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Back-formation of erehtyä (itself from erä) with metathesis. A Germanic origin, from Proto-Germanic *irzijaną (compare Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌶𐌾𐌰𐌽 (airzjan, “to delude, to mislead”)) is unlikely on both phonological and morphological grounds.
