Etymology[edit]
Calque of Medieval Latin ingeniārius (“one who makes or uses an engine”), composed of inherited engenho + -eiro, from Latin ingenium (“an engine”). Alternatively a calque of French ingénieur composed in the same fashion. Compare also Spanish ingeniero.
