From Old Occitan ambayssada, derivative of ambaissa (“service”), from Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌱𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌹 (andbahti, “service, function”), from Proto-Germanic *andbahtiją (“service, office”), derivative of Proto-Germanic *ambahtaz (“servant”), from Gaulish *ambactos (“servant”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi (“round about, around”) + Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (“to drive”).
