Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Hmong *qlowᴬ (“white”).[1] The "free" sense is perhaps a semantic loan from Thai ขาว (kǎao, “white”) or Lao ຂາວ (khāo, “white”), both which have a colloquial usage meaning "free of charge".
