Probably from a Vulgar Latin root *cotītus (sharpened), from *cotīre (sharpen), from Latin cōs, cōtis (whetstone), or from *acutitus, from *acutīre, from acūtus (sharp). Compare Aromanian cutsut, cãtsut. Also, cf. ascuțit, cute.
