From cornac (elephant driver, guide), borrowed from Portuguese cornaca, from Sinhalese කූරුව-නායක (kūruwa-nāyaka, elephant trainer), from කූරුව (kūruwa, elephant department) + Sanskrit नायक (nāyaka, guide, leader).
