Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Greek or Byzantine Greek καλόγερος (kalógeros), possibly partly though a Slavic intermediary; compare Serbo-Croatian kaluđer, Bulgarian калугер (kaluger). Cf. also Aromanian cãlugãr.
