Elision of /l/ from Proto-Philippine *bulan, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bulan, from Proto-Austronesian *bulaN. Compare Ilocano bulan, Pangasinan bulan, Kapampangan bulan, Cebuano bulan, Hiligaynon bulan, Waray-Waray bulan, Maranao bolan, Indonesian bulan, Sundanese ᮘᮥᮜᮔ᮪ (bulan), Javanese ꦉꦩ꧀ꦧꦸꦭꦤ꧀ (rembulan), Malay bulan, Fijian vula, Malagasy volana, and Niuean pula. - Today, sense “month” is pronounced as búwan while “moon” is still pronounced as buwán in some parts of Batangas. Both senses were pronounced búwan around the 19th century.
