Etymology[edit]
Constructed as bendu (“friend”) + -an, inherited from Malay banduan (“convict”), from Hindi बँधुआ (bandhuā, “prisoner, captive; slave”), from Sanskrit बन्ध् (bandh, “to take or hold captive”).
