Inherited from Old French aveinie, from Italian avania (“a heavy tax”), from Byzantine Greek ἁβανία (habanía) (modern Greek αβανιά (avaniá, “defamation, slander”)), from Arabic خَوَّان (ḵawwān, “unreliable, traitor”).
