automated manual transmission (plural automated manual transmissions)

  1. (automotive) A type of single-clutch automatic transmission that is closely based on the internal design and mechanical build and of a conventional manual transmission; but is computer-controlled, and does require any manual input from the driver to change gear or actuate the clutch.
