From Latin arte (by skill), (ablative of ars (art)) + factum (thing made), from facio (to make, do"). Equivalent to a possible Proto-Romance or Vulgar Latin *artefactum (compare Portuguese artefato, Spanish artefacto); see also artifex (artist).
