What color is sable?

[edit]

The hexadecimal code of the sable color represented here is 394243. This looks totally black to me on my monitor (I set up my monitor to 16 bit colors, whereas the hexadecimal code represent a 24 bit colors). The Web site http://color.wikia.com/wiki/Sable gives 402000 as the hexadecimal code for sable. This looks like a very dark brown on my monitor. So, what is the truth here, or are there real standards? Mateat 18:56, 27 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Russian origin?

[edit]

I think sable is of the relatively modern Russian not of generic Slavic origin. It penetrated German as Zobel and Finnish as soopeli from Russian. --Anatoli 02:59, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unlikely. The word is attested in Old High German in the 11th century: Russians didn't exist back then. --Vahag 03:51, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's a shame ;). Let it be Old Slavonic then. --Anatoli 04:32, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
