Etymology[edit]

Quail may be influenced by the meaning of Old English CWELAN[6] = Old Saxon QUELEN[8], (to die), but not from it[5]. Seems to be a hybrid of meaning from Dutch QUELEN[4], (to pine away); and Old French QUAILIER[6], whence Middle English QUAILEN[8], (to curdle, coagulate). Compare also Welsh CHOLLER[5], (to perish), ultimately from same Proto-Indo-European root. Andrew H. Gray 11:07, 19 September 2015 (UTC) Andrew (talk)
