- From Hindi and other Indian languages. It originated from the Cantonese (dialect of Chinese) pronunciation of the character茶 Image:Tea.bmp, which means "tea". The Minnan dialect's pronunciation is the root of the word "tea" in many other languages (including English).

Better etymology needed
[edit]A better etymology is needed for the French term meaning "wine cellar" which is supposedly derived from Occitan. 173.88.246.138 21:14, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
