Note[edit]

Subtly is noted in several dictionaries ````

That doesn't make any sense! My definition was for the word catty--not any nouns or adjectives. I'm not editing this site anymore. Only my first edit and this is the behavior I run into ````

Concern[edit]

The word applies to subtle acts of hostility or at least acts or remarks done out of subtle hostility, as is proven here: http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/DictionaryResults.aspx?lextype=3&search=catty http://dictionary.infoplease.com/catty http://www.wordsmyth.net/live/home.php?script=search&matchent=catty&matchtype=exact http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Catty?r=66 http://www.thefreedictionary.com/catty

However, this wiktionary term is not highlighting it as such and the definition I added numerous times was removed on the ridiculous basis of it being a definition for a noun and not an adjective, as shown here [1] . This made absolutely no sense. Instead of the admin correcting what "made it a definition for a noun and not an adjective" there was repeated revision. This was all well over a year ago and stepped out of the situation out of fear of an unjust ban as I noticed the user I dealt with was an admin. So there's no objection as to whether the definition is fit for a noun or an adjective, I have changed my definition completely. Hopefully this helps! 65.31.103.28 14:05, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Grammar is basic. The folks who patrol often don't have time to rework the vast number of changes. Our normal process is to add a new definition (sense) and put an {{rfv-sense}} tag on a sense that we thought was wrong. Other dictionaries are not conclusive about the non-existence of a sense: we aspire to include as many of the ways a word is used as can be shown to exist. Frankly, cats and cattiness are not always subtle, IMHO. DCDuring TALK 12:14, 4 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Rfv-sense: Both Chinese measures, allegedly transliterations rather than 'words'. See also three items below. Mglovesfun (talk) 12:15, 19 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's trivial; b.g.c turns up quite a selection when searching for "catty weight", dating back to 1699.--Prosfilaes 18:06, 15 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
