"for the gain of"? But this might not be idiomatic English.

Also, the translations here are insufficient; there's often an idea of exchange/trade off/loss: see for example

  • « Or, trop souvent, le citoyen a le sentiment d'avoir perdu ce droit, au profit de pouvoirs divers, de moins en moins identifiés, comme par exemple la technocratie. »
  • "All too often, in fact, the citizens feel they have forfeited this right to various less and less identifiable powers, such as technocracy."
