It seems we have the definition in reverse order - the variant spelling part is surely secondary to the definition itself. I suggest:
1. (law) one who encourages in doing bad things. A variant spelling of abetter to be preferred in legal documents.

- Oof, how weird; thanks for pointing this out. The first one's awkward, too.
