Etymology

Uncertain; possibly related to Proto-Germanic *werþaną, which would derive it from Indo-European *wr̥t(s)-tis, from Proto-Indo-European *wert- (“to turn”). In this case the original meaning would have been "something twisted". Alternatively from *wr̥s-tis, from the root *wers- (“to mix up”), which would make it "something mixed up, something mangled".
