Proto-West Germanic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain; possibly related to Proto-Germanic *werþaną, which would derive it from Indo-European *wr̥t(s)-tis, from Proto-Indo-European *wert- (to turn). In this case the original meaning would have been "something twisted". Alternatively from *wr̥s-tis, from the root *wers- (to mix up), which would make it "something mixed up, something mangled".
