From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śalˀnā́ˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱolH-n-eh₂. Cognate with Latvian sal̂na (light frost), Lithuanian šalnà (light frost), Proto-Germanic *hehlǭ.
