Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *pVrɣVč- (flea, grasshopper, louse). Dubiously connected by Dillmann to Ge'ez አንፈርዐጸ (ʾänfärʿäṣä, to prance, to leap). Compare also Proto-Turkic *bürge, *bürče and Proto-Indo-European *plúsis.
