From Proto-Indo-European *réwgʰmn̥ (cream), from Proto-Indo-European *rew-, *rewe-, *rū- (to scratch, dig, scrape, take off, skim). Possible cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *ráwgʰnas, whence Proto-Iranian *ráwgnah.
