It seems the name originated in the 19th century as a feminine diminutive of Ralle, Rale, Raletos, and other old forms of Heraclius (Heraclius), derived, through Latin Hērāclīus, from Ancient Greek Ἡράκλειος (Hērákleios), adjectival name of Ἡρακλῆς (Hēraklês, Heracles, literally Hera's glory).
For instance, Princess Rallou Caragea was nicknamed Raluca.
