Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Albanian Peja, definite nominative of Pejë. Ultimately from Serbo-Croatian peć (furnace), which probably refers to the hermitaries in the caves of nearby Rugova Canyon formerly inhabited by Serbian Orthodox monks.
