New Latin, from Latin panthera (“leopard”) + tigris (“tiger”)
Proper noun[edit]
- A taxonomic subspecies within the family Felidae – the continental tiger.
Usage notes[edit]
- After 1911 and prior to 2017, P. tigris tigris was defined geographically such as to be synonymous with Bengal tiger.
- Following a reevaluation of felid classification in 2017, the subspecies was expanded to include other populations.
