Corruption of Moesogothic, replacing Moeso- (“of Moesia”) with meso- (“middle”) by incorrect analysis of the term as meso- + Gothic; or a common English simplification as in encyclopædia/encyclopaedia > encyclopedia, cœnobite/coenobite > cenobite
