Corruption of Moesogothic, replacing Moeso- (of Moesia) with meso- (middle) by incorrect analysis of the term as meso- + Gothic; or a common English simplification as in encyclopædia/encyclopaedia > encyclopedia, cœnobite/coenobite > cenobite
