[edit]Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Malay Japan, itself a borrowing from Hokkien 日本 (Ji̍t-pún), literally “sunrise” (the same meaning of Japanese 日本 (Nip-pon)), made, like most other country names, into a feminine 4th-declension noun.
