Etymology[edit]
First attested as Groot en Kleijn Barlo in 1655. Derived from groot (“great, large”) and a compound derived from bar (“barren”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”). Compare Baal, Baarlo, Bahr, Barlo, Baarle-Hertog, and Baarle-Nassau.
