Proper noun[edit]

Heerlen

  1. A city and municipality in Limburg province, Netherlands.

Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as Late Latin Coriouallum and Corioualum around 300. Derived from a Germanic calque of an earlier Celtic name. The Germanic term is a compound of Proto-Germanic *harja- (army) and *walla (wall). An alternative theory posits that the Germanic term was calqued into Celtic. Proposed derivations from *harila (small sandy ridge) or a compound of Old Dutch her (army) and le (burial mound) are incorrect. Compare Heel and Heerle.
