haug +‎ -e- +‎ sund, with the meaning "the strait by the farm 'Haugar'", first part is the plural of haug (heap, pile) from Old Norse haugr (howe, cairn), from Proto-Germanic *haugaz (height, hill), from Proto-Indo-European *kewk- (hill, elevation). Last part from Old Norse sund (swimming; narrow waters (which you can swim across)), from Proto-Germanic *sundą (swimming, sound, strait), from earlier *swumdan, from Proto-Indo-European *swm̥tóm.
