Etymology[edit]

According to legend, In the neighboring villages lived a guy Criu and a girl Lenuța. They were in love with each other, but their parents forbade them to marry. Finding no other way out, the lovers rushed into the Dniester. The lovers' relatives understood the depth of the tragedy and eventually moved to the place where Criu and Lenuța drowned. The settlement was named Criu-Leana. Later the name changed to Criuleni.
