[edit]From Gaulish *bel- (“bright; luminous”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (“shiny; white”) (cognate with Proto-Slavic *bělъ (“white”)) and from Gaulish *Wesuawos, *Bellowesus, from Proto-Celtic *wesus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wésus (“excellent”).
