Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *dΚ°ugtr-yo- plus a suffix *-ata/i-, from *dΚ°wΓ©ghβ‚‚trΜ₯ (β€œdaughter”). According to Kloekhorst, it is a borrowing from Luwian π’Ίπ’Œ“π’‹»π’Š‘π’„Ώπ’€€π’‹Ύπ’…–.

Noun

[edit]

π’Ίπ’Œ“π’‹»π’Š‘π’…€π’‹Ύπ’…€π’€Έ β€’ (duttariyatiyas) (genitive singular)

  1. of a female functionary (genitive singular of π’Ίπ’Œ“π’‹»π’Š‘π’…€π’‹Ύπ’…– (du-ut-tar-ri-ya-ti-iΕ‘))

Notes

[edit]

While the first part of this word looks clearly related to the word family in Indo-European meaning β€œdaughter”, which suggests that it is derived from an earlier word for β€œdaughter”, it is unlikely to have been the Hittite word for β€œdaughter”, π’Œ‰π’Š© (DUMU.MUNUS) (acc.sg. π’Œ‰π’Š©π’†·π’€ (DUMU.MUNUS-la-an)), which, though never fully written phonetically, appears too dissimilar to be considered cognate.
