Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄒᆞ〮야〮디다〮 (Yale: hóyá-tìtá), a regular passive of unattested *ᄒᆡ〮다〮 (Yale: hóy-tá).

Original meaning: "to become destroyed; to become injured".
