Etymology[edit]
First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 거러치. Gloss to character 隸. Borrowing from Middle Mongol ᠬᠠᠷᠠᠴᠦ (qaračü, “commoner”) related to Kyrgyz карача, literally, a 'black one'; modern Mongolian coordinate form is Mongolian харц (xarc).
