From Proto-Vietic *s-ʔəmʔ (lukewarm), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(s)ʔəm ~ *(s)ʔəəm ~ *(s)ʔuum ~ *(s)ʔuəm (warm). Cognate with Khmer ស្អំ (sʼɑm, warm), Kuy səʔam, Khmu [Cuang] hʔɨm. Possibly related to hâm.
