From แม่ (mɛ̂ɛ, a title for or term of address to a woman) +‎ นาง (naang, idem). Compare Khmer មេនាង (meiniəng); Lao ແມ່ນາງ (mǣ nāng). Cognate with Vietnamese mị nương, mỵ nương.[1]
