Of onomatopoeic origin, possibly from the cooing sound of monkeys. Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *korVnk-. Cognate with Malayalam കുരങ്ങ് (kuraṅṅŭ), Tulu ಕುರಂಗ (kuraṅga), Kannada ಕೋಡಂಗಿ (kōḍaṅgi).
