Inherited from Early Assamese পোৱাল (pöwalo), from Sanskrit প্ৰৱাড (pravāḍa). Cognate with Bengali পলা (pola), Odia ପୋହଳା (pohôḷa), Nepali पुवाँलो (puwā̃lo), Gujarati પરવાળું (parvāḷũ), Marathi पवळेँ (pavḷeĕ̃), Sinhalese පවළ (pawaḷa).
