Inherited from Prakrit 𑀤𑀳 (daha), from Sanskrit দ্ৰহ (draha, “deep lake”). Cognate with Bengali দহ (doho, “tank, lake, deep pool”), Odia ଦହ (dôhô, “lake, deep (water), marsh, mud”), Nepali दह (daha, “natural pond, cistern”), Bhojpuri 𑂠𑂯 (dah) / दह (dah, “lake”), Hindustani دہ / दह (dah, “deep pool”), Sinhalese දහ (daha, “lake, pond”), Pali daha (“pond, lake”).
