Etymology

Inherited from Early Assamese ঝিউ (jhiu), from Magadhi Prakrit [Term?] (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀥𑀻𑀆 (dhīā)), from Sanskrit দুহিতৃ (duhitṛ). Cognate with Bengali ঝি (jhi), Sylheti ꠎꠤ (zi), Odia ଝିଅ (jhiô), Hindi धी (dhī), धिया (dhiyā).
