From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰayman, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéy-mn̥ ~ *ǵʰi-mén-s (“winter”). Related to हेमन्त (hemanta, “winter”) and हिम (hima, “snow”); see there for cognates.
