Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀳𑀤𑀺 (vahadi), from Sanskrit वहति (váhati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáȷ́ʰati, from Proto-Indo-European *wéǵʰeti. Cognate with Marathi वाहणे (vāhṇe), Bengali বহা (boha)/বওয়া (bôoẇa), Assamese বোৱা (büa). Distant cognate with English weigh.
