Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀞𑀸𑀡 (ṭhāṇa), from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna, place, station), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáHnam, from Proto-Indo-European stéh₂-no-m, from *steh₂- (to stand).

Doublet of स्थान (sthān), a tatsama, and of -स्तान (-stān), a Persian loanword.
