Etymology[edit]
From Arabic الْإِسْكَنْدَرِيَّة (al-ʔIskandariyya), from Byzantine Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia), from Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, “Alexander”) + -ειᾰ (-eia, “-ia: forming place names”) for its founder Alexander the Great. Doublet of اسكندرون.
