From Greek σχάρα (schára, grill, grate), itself from Ancient Greek ἐσχάρα (eskhára, hearth).

  2. (by extension) barbecue, the meat and fish broiled on a gridiron
  3. grating, a barrier that has parallel or crossed iron bars blocking a passage
